Tattoo Aftercare Guide
Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and maintains its vibrancy. Follow these steps carefully to prevent infection, excessive fading, and other complications.
Immediate Aftercare (First 24 Hours)
Leave the bandage on – Your artist will apply a bandage or wrap after your tattoo is completed. Keep it on for the recommended time (usually 2-4 hours, unless otherwise advised). This protects your fresh tattoo from bacteria and irritation.
Wash your hands first – Before touching your tattoo, always wash your hands with antibacterial soap.
Gently clean your tattoo – Remove the bandage and wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your fingertips (not a washcloth or sponge) to gently cleanse the area.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel – Avoid using cloth towels, as they can harbor bacteria and irritate your tattoo.
Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion – Choose a gentle, non-petroleum-based moisturizer such as Aveeno, Lubriderm, or Hustle Butter. Avoid thick ointments like Aquaphor, as they can clog pores and slow healing.
Healing with Tegaderm (First 3-5 Days)
If your tattoo is covered with Tegaderm or a similar protective film:
Keep it on for 3-5 days unless otherwise advised.
If you experience severe redness, bumps, or irritation, remove it immediately and proceed with regular aftercare.
When removing, gently peel it off under warm water to avoid irritation.
Short-Term Care (Days 2-14)
Keep your tattoo clean – Wash it twice daily with antibacterial soap and lukewarm water.
Moisturize regularly – Apply a thin layer of Lubriderm lotion (avoid Aquaphor and A&D ointment) 2-3 times per day to prevent dryness.
Avoid picking or scratching – Your tattoo will scab and peel naturally. Do NOT scratch or pick at it, as this can cause scarring and color loss.
Stay away from excessive moisture – Avoid soaking your tattoo in water (baths, pools, hot tubs) for at least 4 weeks.
Limit sun exposure – Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight. If you must be outside, cover it with loose clothing.
Wear loose, breathable clothing – Tight fabrics can cause irritation and slow the healing process.
Long-Term Care (After Healing)
Always use sunscreen – Once fully healed (after about 4-6 weeks), apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to prevent fading.
Stay hydrated – Keeping your skin healthy will help your tattoo look fresh for years.
Moisturize regularly – Even after healing, keeping your tattoo moisturized helps maintain vibrancy.
Touch-ups if needed – If you notice excessive fading, consult your artist about a possible touch-up.
Common Tattoo Aftercare Questions
What should I avoid during the healing process?
Direct sunlight
Swimming, hot tubs, and baths
Scratching, picking, or peeling
Excessive sweating from intense workouts
Extremely tight clothing over the tattooed area
What if my tattoo gets infected?
Signs of infection include excessive redness, swelling, pus, and a fever. If you suspect an infection, contact a doctor immediately.
Why does my tattoo look dull or flaky?
Peeling and dullness are normal during healing. This is just the top layer of skin shedding. Once fully healed, the vibrancy will return.
Can I work out after getting a tattoo?
It's best to avoid intense workouts for the first 3 days, especially if your tattoo is in a high-friction area. Sweating excessively can cause irritation.
When can I shave over my tattoo?
Wait at least 2-3 weeks or until your tattoo is fully healed before shaving the area.
By following these guidelines, you’ll ensure your tattoo heals properly and stays looking sharp for years to come. If you have any concerns during the healing process, don’t hesitate to reach out!
